What is a Letter of Intent (LOI)?
A LOI is a brief description of a proposed research activity that researchers
submit through their membership association to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC). For the 2009 funding cycle, LOIs will be
used to plan the peer review process. The LOIs will not be evaluated for
scientific or technical merit.
Who may apply?
All investigators who are members of one or more of the following associations:
Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), Association of Schools
of Public Health (ASPH) and the Association for Prevention Teaching and
Research (APTR) are eligible to apply and to compete in this process.
Investigators should submit LOIs in response to the Potential Extramural
Projects. LOIs may also be submitted for non-research Investigator Initiated
projects.
What should a LOI include?
Each LOI requires the LOI form (Word).
The LOI should be no more than 3 pages including the LOI form. LOI should
be prepared using single spaced Times New Roman 12-point unreduced font,
and written in plain language (avoiding jargon and undefined acronyms).
Each LOI should contain the following information:
- Name of the Association (AAMC, ASPH or APTR) through which you are
applying;
- Descriptive title of your proposed project;
- Number and title of the PEP for which you are applying;
- Name, address, E-mail address, and telephone number of the Principal
Investigator;
- Names of other key personnel at applicant institution and other participating
institutions; and
- A brief summary of the proposed project plan (for use in identifying
potential reviewers).
LOI Submission Guidelines:
For the 2009 funding cycle, LOIs must be submitted electronically to your
respective association. Paper submissions will not be accepted.
LOIs must be submitted electronically as Microsoft Word documents.
Applicants should include the following information in the subject line
of their E-mails: LOI [insert the individual PEP number or IIA if submitting
an Investigator Initiated LOI] and [insert the last name and first initial
of the Principal Investigator].
